What We're Looking for This Year

•	More advanced classes—In-depth classes that examine a product in detail and teach attendees new and efficient ways to use their Autodesk® Fabrication software.
•	Process and workflow strategies—Classes that show attendees how to use multiple Autodesk products together and make optimal use of Autodesk design and creation suites. Handoffs within and between products are increasingly important for users.
•	Business management solutions—Classes that help attendees improve company workflow, collaboration, and overall efficiency; provide strategies for adopting and implementing new technologies; and share methods for improving concept-to-completion cycles.

Autodesk University 2012 is nearly upon us and we’ll be providing the latest information on what’s going on through our social media channels.

Autodesk University is the leading Autodesk User Conference, with thousands upon thousands of Autodesk users descending on Las Vegas for 3 days of seminars, training, and lectures on virtually all Autodesk products.

If you are attending make sure you follow the social media channels below for the latest information on the event. If you are not attending, following these channels will give you an insight in to the going’s-on at Autodesk University.

Also, if you are there, try to come and visit Andy, Peter, and Stuart, who will be in attendance all week. Andy and Peter both have classes and would love to see our existing customers and new customers alike.

Autodesk Fabrication SP2 released

Well another service pack has been uploaded, just like being at MAP, a steady flow up updates for our customers, this pack again leans on 'patch' technology, so there is no need to install SP1 if you have not done so already, simply install SP2 and you will get all the SP1 functionality included. Sweet.

Warming up for AU2012

We are all getting quite excited about our first AU! The preparations are well underway at the Autodesk Blackpool office, with Peter Jackson and Andy Robins creating the content they'll present at the event in Las Vegas.

It's an exciting moment for the integrated MAP team. The opportunity to be at an event with 10,000 like-minded people, all learning and networking and enjoying the environment of Sin City, then realizing we are actually presentating on the software we have so proudly built up over many years to an audience like never before. It's a great feeling.

Remember we have 5 classes dedicated to the Fabrication products at Autodesk University 2012, delivered by two Autodesk employees and two promient customers. There's also a shed load of other stuff happening at Autodesk University too. It's definitely worth checking out (even if it's just to support Peter and Andy). While at the event they'll be various social media channels deployed to keep you up-to-date. Follow them now and then you'll get first hand accounts of what's going on (and if you are there, where to go!).

How (and more importantly when) might BIM fully displace the building industry?

Last time I spoke about how technological changes, ones such a Building Information Modelling, can mean paradigm shifts in the industries that the changes affect. Disruptive technologies perpetually displace present technology in an upward shift, and we established that that upward shift is taking place
now in the AEC space. I mentioned that while it could be easy to see BIM as a marketing tool used by the most prominent technology providers in our industry, in reality it is a process swing that is only going to get stronger and deeper, faster.

While the above is true, the theory is clear in stating that business models are not disrupted overnight. So how could BIM disrupt the building industry?

Autodesk Fabrication 2013 at Autodesk University 2012

I'm excited to announce that at Autodesk University 2012 we will have a track dedicated to the Autodesk Fabrication products, with classes hosted by a number of influential speakers.

This is a great opportunity for anyone out there who is considering learning more about the Fabrication products to get an insight and learn how they work, and for existing customers to have a refresher course or listen to how other businesses are using the software to help them win more work.

This track has been carefully constructed to give the audience a holistic understanding of the products. There are five classes in total that run in a logical order (although you do not need to take all five). If you want maximum benefit, take them all. The classes are targeted as introductions to the software.

Class One: Peter Jackson - Autodesk Technical Specialist: Go Beyond Design: Extend Design Intent from Autodesk® Revit® and AutoCAD® MEP to Autodesk® Fabrication
In this class Peter will overview how the Autodesk Fabrication products can help MEP subcontractors extend design-intent models from their engineering counterparts. Peter will give insight into Autodesk Fabrication set-up, the design line technology and then explain how to use the tools to extend design models for fabrication detailing.

Class Two: Peter Jackson - Autodesk Technical Specialist: Go Beyond Design: Using Autodesk® Fabrication Software to Extend Design Intent (LAB)
Peter will use this class to extend from his first lecture and give the audience hands-on experience in Autodesk Fabrication set-up, design line functionality, and then extending design models to prepare for fabrication and installation. This is a Lab event where people will be put at computers and be able to follow Peter step-by-step to recreate the processes discussed.

Class Three: Dave Pikey - The Hill Group: Bringing Buildings to Market with Autodesk® Fabrication Software
Dave Pikey, BIM Integration Director of Chicago-based The Hill Group, will bring a real-world perspective for the Autodesk Fabrication products, discussing the benefit of using multiple products in the portfolio to stay competitive in the evolving construction world.

Class Four: Joe Mierzejewski - J.C. Cannistraro: Building with Intelligence: Using BIM for Lean Prefabrication
Joe Mierzejewski from J.C. Cannistraro will be on-hand to talk to you about the benefits of using model intelligence to support the prefabrication of building services systems. Joe will outline how prefabrication and lead production methods help build better buildings and maintain a competitive advantage, all through the Autodesk Fabrication products.

Class Five: Andy Robins - Autodesk Software Development Manager: Fabrication for MEP: Detailing, Costing, and Fabrication Integration
Andy Robins, software development manager for the Autodesk Fabrication products, will conclude the track by building on information already provided in the previous tracks to show how the products can be used to help achieve the required results. Andy will expand on the design line functionality explained in Peter's classes and show how it can be used within the Fabrication software to prepare models for prefabrication and installation.

There's an Autodesk Virtual Event happening very soon and it's going to be a great opportunity for you to see how some of the new Autodesk software works and can help you see how this software can you change the way you work, for the better. It will include insights into Autodesk BIM 360 too.

Autodesk Fabrication 2013 Service Pack Released

It’s been a while since I first posted, as you can imagine we have been very busy in response to the First Customer Ship of the 2013 Fabrication product range, resulting in our first service pack (details below). This is another milestone for the Autodesk Fabrication (MAP) team as we have implemented ‘patch’ technology with these packs, guaranteeing that no database files are affected, only the EXE’s and support files that require patching are updated. I would heartily recommend Service Pack 1 for all Autodesk Fabrication 2013 users as it provides significant updates and enhancements.

Taking Fabrication FABmep models back into Revit 2013

In this blog I am going to give you an overview of how to take a model from Fabrication FABmep 2013 back into Autodesk Revit 2013. Remember, this workflow relies on an Autodesk Labs technology preview. We appreciate all feedback - if you have feedback and suggestions please use the contact details on the Autodesk Labs page.

Scripting Editor

As mentioned in my last post, I will be covering the built in Script Editor that comes with the Autodesk Fabrication CAMduct software, but I would like to quickly thank CJ for his comment on my last post, it's nice to know that someone is reading this, and yes I am planning on posting some more useful scripts that may help you out, or at least give you an insight to what is possible with scripts.
