EnergyPlus is the most advanced building energy simulation tool available to the building industry. High performance building design projects, LEED EA Credit evaluation and code compliance determination can all benefit from the advanced simulation capabilities of EnergyPlus. Recently DOE released EnergyPlus V8.2 with significant performance improvements and feature enhancements. EnergyPlus source code has been translated to C++ and is published as an open source project in GitHub.
Autodesk contributed to the C++ translation and donated the code to DOE at GreebBuild 2013. During the past year, Autodesk has developed strategies using cloud computing techniques to improve the simulation speed by severl times faster than desktop. At GreenBuild 2014 Autodesk has announced a tech preview project EnergyPlus Cloud for designers to run simulations in the cloud. EnergyPlus Cloud is a web service with which designers can submit their EnergyPlus input files and access the simulation results in the cloud – without having any local computing resources. You can submit EnergyPlus models from mobile devices and see the results in a matter of seconds or minutes, typically 5x-10x faster than desktop runtimes. Complex building models requiring one hour or more for annual simulation in a desktop computer can be analyzed in five to ten minutes now. Autodesk is seeking beta testers to use this service and provide feedback to improve and integrate energy simulation in their workflow. The beta tester access is limited to first 100 qualified applicants. You can register at: Project EnergyPlus Cloud.
