Take Away: Autodesk FormIt v6.0 for iOS now available: Incorporates Building Performance Analysis from the very earliest stages of the design process.
By: Ian Molloy, Senior Product Manager, Building Performance Analysis
Autodesk FormIt helps you capture building design concepts anytime, anywhere ideas strike and provides a continuous BIM workflow experience by synchronizing design in the cloud for further refinement using Autodesk Revit.
Now with Version 6.0 for iOS (available here) from the moment you create a new sketch or open an existing one key building performance information is incorporated to help you understand the role and impact of key design information.
Autodesk FormIt v6.0 for iOS – Integrated Building Design and Performance Information
At this time the performance dashboard includes energy cost range which is based on hundreds of thousands of pre-computed DOE2.2 whole building energy simulations that represent all worldwide climate zones and a wide range of typical building forms, functions and efficiencies (mostly representing new construction standards and beyond).
Therefore before you even set any building information you can see the full potential energy cost range of all building types and sizes in all climate zones. Then as you enter each piece of building design information i.e. location, building type and building size you will see the potential energy cost range immediately update and narrow.
It’s worth noting that the building design information can be set in any order, individually or combined. This is useful for understanding and illustrating the impact each factor has on potential energy cost range. While the energy cost range does not take into account your particular FormIt sketch geometry at this time it does help roughly inform any energy performance expectations or targets right from the outset of the project.

Tell us what you think: Considering the application of FormIt to the very earliest stages of the design process the incorporation of Building Performance information in such an easy, integral way is something we are very excited about and we’re keen to hear your thoughts about it so if you have an iPad or iPhone please do give it a go and let us know what you think. We’re very keen to hear your feedback in order to shape future development.
