In the UK there's a mandate to reach BIM Level 2 by next year, as part of this there are three deliverables on a project, 2D drawings as we always have, the 3D model (typically in native format and IFC), and COBie data drops of the information in the model. This structured COBie data format will require information about the delivered asset that can only be collected in the field such as serial numbers, installation and warranty information.
BIM 360 Field is being used by many to collect this field information about equipment at the point of construction in the field, whether this be windows, air handling units or escalators. This is saving time for commissioning and handover as the data is collected once digitally and doesn't need to be converted from hand written notes and checklists.
When collecting this information against model items, there's a few ways to get this information back. You can export this data out from BIM 360 Field web portal, Open the data in Navisworks and use the Selection Inspector to export this to Excel, or use the Equipment Properties button in Revit to pull the data in against items there. To get this data into a COBie format though, needs an extra step to get to the correct format.
Many people are already using the free COBie extension for Revit to create COBie exports of the Revit model in the design stages; however we need to make one extra step to map the BIM 360 Field commissioning data into the COBie format.
Dynamo is a visual programming tool that lets designers create logic and adds behavior to a BIM to explore parametric designs and automate tasks. It binds with Revit to create very powerful workflows without needing to understand a programming language. We've put together a Dynamo script which allows you to map those BIM 360 Field properties from their BIM 360 field's to the configured COBie ones, allowing you to export a COBie drop with the relevant serial numbers, installation and warranty information.

Here's some brief instructions on getting this working
- Unzip COBie_Translator.zip to somewhere handy
- Install COBie extension for Revit and Dynamo 0.8.2 or later
Open your Revit model and prepare for COBie export using the extension
Import BIM 360 Field properties using Equipment Properties
- Open Dynamo and COBie_Translator.dyn
Select location for Excel file
Select the items you want to map properties to
- Press Run in Dynamo
The relevant COBie fields should now be completed and ready to export
You can add additional fields for mapping by adding extra rows to the Excel spreadsheet (Note: This is Case sensitive)
